Foto Friday – A virtual camera

I just found the coolest thing! One of the biggest questions we get teaching digital photography is all about f/stops (aperture) and shutter speeds. These basic concepts, along with the ISO speed, form the basis of getting a good exposure and therefore a good picture. Deeply understanding the relationship between the three also helps you to improve your photography by being able to manipulate the settings to get great special effects like blurs and shallow depth of field.

But how to teach it? It’s been tough so far. But not anymore. Head right over to The Virtual Camera by Craig Hickman at Dryreading.com . Craig has written a little application that works just like a camera and shows you the results right away. Change the shutter speed – see what it does immediately. Change the aperture – see how it affects the picture. It even shows you what the different changes do using the different camera modes, like Program, Aperture Priority, etc. The site also provides a clear, concise explanation of the three.

So a huge thank you to Craig Hickman. It will make our life a lot easier in our teaching as we’ll now be able to point our students to his site and give them even greater and better information. If you are are interested in our digital photography classes or any of our classes click here.

Wow that’s cool and really fun!! I will usually set my camera on Program, but now I know how to use the Av setting and change my f-stop for a blurry background. Thanks!

  4. Really cool tool! I have the hardest time remembering to change my settings while taking candid shots. I rely too much on the auto function!
